Be There Or Be Square!

Now that the Holidays are over and we’ve put 2010 behind us, it’s time to start planning for that perennial tradition in Market Research: conferences and seminars! There are a bevy of events coming up that are near and dear to my heart, so rather than recap everything that is scheduled (you can find that here), this is the list of events happening over the next few months that I recommend all readers of the GreenBook Blog attend.

Starting things off is the Technology Driven Market Research conference scheduled for May 2-3, 2011 at the Hotel Allerton Chicago in Chicago, IL.  The theme for this year’s conference is “Capture Insights in Real time, Measure Meaningful Chatter, and Showcase Breakthrough Methodologies.”. You can download the pdf of the brochure or take a look at the program at the event website:

Now full disclosure; I will be Chairing this conference and presenting on the results of the recently completed GreenBook Research Industry Trends study, but don’t let that keep you away; this is going to be a fantastic conference firmly focused on the next generation of research technologies and methods and how they are being used today by some of the largest companies in the world.

Below is a snapshot by day, but for more information on each, please reference the brochure.

Like all IIR events, the TDMR offers not just the best in speakers and content, but also an amazing amount of visibility for sponsors, attendees, and exhibitors– I hope that you will attend!

Looking at more immediate events we have several that I think are “can’t miss”, plus several are free virtual events!

I’ve become a big fan of the team at Survey Analytics; these guys understand where the industry is headed and continue to roll out some of the best, most forward-looking technology solutions on the market for the research industry. They run a couple of different businesses and brands – QuestionPro, IdeaScale, SurveyAnalytics and MicroPoll. Over the last 3 months of 2010, they have been working on a mobile strategy that can help round out their suite of products: SurveySwipe – Mobile Research Platform.

Regular readers know my position on mobile research, but I’ll repeat it again just in case the message has not sunk in: as consumers move their lives into their smartphones it’s imperative that we follow and innovate on that trend. We’re seeing lots of mobile solutions being rolled out right now, but I am most optimistic about SurveySwipe. The solution is launching on January 18 and here is why I am excited about it:

  • A built in community of users downloading a smartphone app – To my knowledge SurveySwipe is the first mobile research solution to support all 4 major smartphone platforms – iPhone/iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7 and BlackBerry out of the gate.
  • Users are profiled for segmentation purposes and targeting on the front end (Gender, Age, et. al.)
  • They’ve partnered with Amazon and Apple to give Amazon Gift Certs. and access to new Apps as the currency for redeeming points earned through participation. I believe that the App model for incentivizing users to take surveys is not only the appropriate one for mobile research, but one of the most innovative solutions in the marketplace today. These guys have really figured out the best way to engage respondents!
  • Integrated Push Notification and Location Based Services – obviously both these capabilities can play a huge role in collecting data, and this platform is doing it upon launch for multiple OSs. Very cool.

If you are interested in learning more about SurveySwipe and how it can be used for your research initiatives there is a webinar scheduled next Tuesday, January 11th at 8 AM PST. Click on the gotomeeting link below to register for the webinar.

Following the interest in gaming at the Festival of NewMR they are holding a somewhat unstructured event on Thursday 20th January, from 2pm to 5pm GMT/London (9am to 12 midday EST/New York). The event is going to start with ten 10-minute presentations on the theme of market research and gaming. The session will then facilitate an online discussion on the issues raised by the presentations.

Ray Poynter, the event organizer discussed his intention behind the session:

The design of the event is intended to be the start of a process we do not imagine that it will provide much in the way of answers, we are looking for it to suggest questions and possible avenues for investigation, and we hope that it might stimulate some further collaboration.

As of yesterday there are still four speaking spaces available. These will go to the first four people who put in a credible suggestion at

Last but not least, on January 11, Research Rockstar  will be hosting a Market Research Twitterversity, complete with visiting professors. 117 market research lessons will be released over 17 hours. Hashtag #MRXU.

The content is aimed at anyone interested in learning market research basics—people who may be new to conducting, using, purchasing or receiving market research. Kathryn Korostoff outlined why the event is important:

* Are you a market research manager? You might find this useful for your internal clients or junior staff.

* Are you with a market research agency? You may find this useful for newer hires, interns, or sales staff.

* Are you a marketing professor? Your students will find this content easy to grasp.

* Are you a business professional who sometimes receives market research reports? You may find these mini-lessons will help you to get more value from those reports.
